Wei Wang receives IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Doctoral Research Grant

Wei Wang, a Ph.D. student in electrical engineering at the University of Notre Dame, has been awarded an IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) Doctoral Research Grant.

The grant will support Wang’s work on the design, fabrication, and testing of millimeter wave antennas for next-generation wireless communications.

Wang’s research focuses on the development of gradient index (GRIN) lens antennas to increase the range and data rate of wireless networks while lowering the power consumption and cost.

“Wei has developed state-of-the-art design algorithms and simulation tools to create the complex material structures of GRIN lenses,” said Jonathan Chisum, associate professor of electrical engineering, director of the Microwave & Millimeter-wave Circuits and Systems lab and affiliate member of the Wireless institute.

“With Wei’s methods and tools, GRIN lenses are poised to revolutionize high-performance millimeter-wave wireless for low power and low-cost applications, including wireless networks, satellite communications, and advanced sensing.”

Earlier this year, Wei also received the 2022 IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Fellowship, which will support his exploration of low-cost manufacturing methods for commercial GRIN lens products.
