Costello Receives Award for Service to Information Theory Community

Daniel Costello, Jr., Notre Dame’s Bettex Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering Emeritus, recently received the 2013 Aaron D. Wyner Distinguished Service Award at the 2013 International Symposium on Information Theory, held July 8-12 in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Aaron D. Wyner Distinguished Service Award of the IEEE Information Theory Society was established to honor an individual who has shown outstanding leadership in and provided long-standing, exceptional service to the Information Theory community. This award was initiated as the IT Society Distinguished Service Award in 2004, but was renamed to the Aaron D. Wyner Distinguished Service Award in 2005.

According to the members of the Awards Committee, Dr. Costello was chosen because he is one of the most respected and admired researchers in the fields of communications and information theory. He has been a reliable supporter of the IEEE Information Theory Society for over four decades, serving as its President in 1986; three times as ISIT co-chair; three times as board member; chair of many committees including the Conferences, Fellows, and Hamming medal committees; Associate Editor for the IEEE Information Theory and Communications Transactions; co-author of a popular textbook on coding; and winner of several IEEE paper prizes.
