Laneman Named 2019 Outstanding Teacher in College of Engineering

William Butler Yeats said, “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.” Faculty members across the College of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame know this to be true as they work to nurture the educational and career aspirations of our undergraduates.  

Each engineering faculty member is committed to providing an undergraduate education that is rich in technical content and relevant to the needs of the 21st century while fostering the growth of technical leadership, moral character, and a spirit of service among our students.

As the college acknowledges all of the faculty members who make this possible, we want to recognize special faculty who go above and beyond. For this reason, the College of Engineering awards the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award annually.

Congratulations to J. Nicholas Laneman, the 2019 recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award in the College of Engineering.

Laneman, a professor of electrical engineering and co-director of the Wireless Institute at Notre Dame, joined the University in 2002. His research interests span communications system engineering — blending information theory, signal processing for communications and prototyping and experimental validation — with emphasis on wireless systems.

Students selected Laneman for this honor in recognition of his knowledge, passion, and personable attitude in the classroom. Many commented on his engaging lectures and the way in which he promotes an understanding of intellectually challenging material, effectively connecting it to practical applications. In this way, he continues to make a lasting impact on his students.
