This August will mark the beginning of new leadership not only in the University of Notre Dame’s College of Engineering but also the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE). May 11, Provost Thomas Burish’s office announced, “…after serving for more than a decade as dean of the College of Engineering, Peter Kilpatrick will move to the Illinois Institute of Technology as its new provost…effective August 1, 2018.” After a brief search, on May 25, Burish announced, “It is with gratitude and enthusiasm that I write to inform you that Thomas E. Fuja, professor and chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering, has agreed to serve as interim dean of the College of Engineering effective August 1, 2018.”

Hochwald and Nie awarded IEEE AP-S Harold A. Wheeler Applications Prize Paper Award

Professor Bert Hochwald and former graduate student Ding Nie are the recipients of the 2018 IEEE AP-S Harold A. Wheeler Applications Prize Paper Award. Their prize-winning paper, “Bandwidth Analysis of Multiport Radio Frequency Systems—Part I,” was selected as the best applications paper published in IEEE Transactions on Antenna and Propagation Journal in 2017.

Finding Free Space in a Crowded Spectrum

In the hundred-plus years since the invention of radio, the demand for frequency spectrum has skyrocketed. Today, it is not just commercial radio that competes for spectral “real estate” but also cell phones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS – the list is long. Double Domer and Department of Electrical Engineering graduate student Nikolaus Kleber is working to solve the problem of how to make the best use of a finite resource.

RadioHound Project Announces First Partner Release

The RadioHound project is advancing and building the enabling technologies to create large-scale geographic maps of activity in the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. Combinations of these technologies will enable commercial and government entities to advance situational awareness, efficient spectrum utilization, and enforcement of regulations and spectrum sharing etiquettes to significantly advance numerous applications of the RF spectrum such as communications, sensing and radar, positioning, and electronic warfare.
